Types of Braking Systems
Car accidents often occur due to poor braking systems, your safety should always come first. The more you know about your vehicle the safer you will feel. Know the type of brakes used in your car.
Here are some of the most common types:
- Hydraulic braking system: uses hydraulic fluid (brake fluid) to transmit force to the brake pedal in order to stop your vehicle. It creates pressure within the system and forces the brake pads to stop the wheels from moving.
- Electromagnetic brake/ EM brakes: applies brakes using electronic magnetic power. It increases the life span reliability of your brakes since no friction is used when braking which leads to less wearing out of your breaks. This type of braking system is found in more modern vehicles and hybrid engines.
- Servo brakes system: dramatically reduces the physical effort it takes to thrust your brakes with your feet.
- Mechanical braking system: consists of all mechanical components. It powers the hand brake/ emergency brake in your vehicle.
4 Types of Brakes
- Disc Brakes- has a brake rotor that is attached to the wheel. Hydraulic pressure causes friction between the brake pad and the rotor which in turn slows or stops the vehicle.
- Drum Brakes - consists of a brake drum attached inside the wheel. When the brake pedals contracts, hydraulic pressure presses the brake shoe against the brake drum to stop the vehicle.
- Emergency breaks- also known as park brakes are a secondary braking system which works independently. It is powered by mechanical cables that apply pressure to the wheels.
- Anti-lock b=Brakes- found in newer vehicles to prevent the wheels from locking up to avoid skidding on wet and slippery roads
