What to Do if Your Brakes Fail

October 30th, 2018
As far as automobile technology has come, failing brakes is an issue most people will never encounter in their lifetimes. Nonetheless, it’s important to be prepared for every possible situation on the road. If you are driving and suspect your brakes have failed, here is what you should do: Brake Repair in Spring, TX

Stay Calm: Rarely, if ever, does panicking help in an emergency. Do your best to remain calm and stay focused on the next steps. Your goal will be to get your vehicle off of the road as safely as possible.

Make Sure the Brakes are Out: Because new vehicles have dual braking systems (which control the front and rear brakes separately) you may have only lost half of your braking power. Apply forceful, even pressure to the brake pedal to see if you can gradually slow your vehicle. If this doesn’t get results, try one of the next methods for slowing your car down.

Shift to a Lower Gear: If you drive a manual transmission vehicle, begin shifting through the gears to slow down. Even if you don’t drive a manual, you can force an automatic transmission vehicle to downshift by taking your foot off the gas pedal. The car will eventually downshift as it slows. Your automatic transmission vehicle may even have paddle shifters, which allow you to downshift.

Try Your E-Brake: Your emergency brake is separate from the main braking system, so you can resort to using it if your main brakes fail. You should engage the emergency brake very slowly – this method will take longer than using your main braking system.

Get Off the Road: Using your turn signal, gradually shift over to the right lane and then the shoulder of the road. If necessary, use your horn to alert other motorists. Your car is equipped with a horn for emergencies like this one, so don’t be afraid to use it. Once you have stopped completely, turn on your hazard lights and employ your parking or emergency brake. For your safety, especially on busy roads, remain in your vehicle until help has arrived.
